Here in the UK we've had our prime minister, Gordon Brown, running around the world thinking he's saving it from financial ruin - which has simply had the affect of making the rest of the world assume we're in bigger trouble than anyone (except Iceland). To compound the lunacy, the government tried to "help" the economy by reducing VAT (purchase tax) from 17.5% to 15% (doesn't that make you want to rush out and buy?) whilst announcing simultaneously that, in the future, tax would have to be increased to pay for it. Genius! I'm all for reducing taxation, but we get a pathetic incentive to spend coupled with an unquantified fear of guaranteed greater tax later: guess which one is the stronger motivator of consumer behavior?
