"If you love me, check this box!"
Even though he is not even really in the running, I knew there was a reason why months ago I cheered for Thompson to get in the game. His “Cowboy” non-conformist, simple southern stubborn style was what I liked about him, and he showed some of it in the most recent debate.
The moderator said “I want to take on a new issue. I would like to see a show of hands. How many of you believe global climate change is a serious threat, and caused by human activity?
“Thompson’s reply was “I’m not doing ‘hand shows’, today.”
The debate moderator pushed on and asked again if Thompson would answer the question, and Thompson asked “Well do you want to give me a minute to answer that?”
Her reply was “No, I don’t…” Thompson quickly retorted “Well then, I’m not going to answer it…”
Bravo for Fred. Thompson later clarified that the reason he did so was, some questions deserve more than a hand count, and, even more importantly, people who are running for President should be given more time than that (the time it takes to say yes, no, or raise a hand or not) in order to answer a very important question.
This should be applauded. We have come to a point in this Country where some forms of campaigning have taken on a childish tone. This does not befit the process for selecting one of the most powerful people in our Country, or the world.
Presidential election campaigns should be passionate, respectful, substantive, and complete. They should also lack bias of the broadcasting agency sponsoring the debate.
The sooner our Nation starts realizing that this is not a popularity contest, but a contest of principled ideas on policy and National direction, the better off we will be.
